Concrete blocks are one of the most versatile and robust structural assets used for countless applications, from retaining walls to flood defences, physical perimeter boundaries and preventative security. But what are L8 blocks?<\/strong><\/p>\n

An L8 or LG8 block is a short-hand abbreviation for an interlocking block configured in a standardised size. As the name suggests, these blocks slot together with in-built lifting pins, creating a structure that is assembled in the same way as a concrete block wall.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Specifications for L8 Concrete Blocks<\/h2>\n

L8 blocks are used throughout construction, development planning and other higher-risk environments where freestanding, retaining walls, storage bays or fire protection barriers can mitigate or remove threats to workers, members of the public, or other authorised site visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n

One L8 block measures as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Height: 800 mm<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Width: 800 mm<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Weight: 2,400 kg<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The in-built lifting pin means these blocks, while large and dense, are straightforward to configure in any layout or pattern, with one block creating 1.28 square metres of wall, boundary or perimeter.<\/span><\/p>\n

    L8 blocks are so-named because each concrete barrier block is an 8-section resource, and you can also hire interlocking concrete blocks in various other sizes. A 4-section L4 block measures 800 mm long x 800 mm high x 800 mm wide, and a 6-section L6 block is 1,200 mm long x 800 mm wide x 800 mm high.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In contrast to L8 blocks, an L4 block weighs 1,200 kg and an L6 block 1,800 kg, which are high-density, strong physical blocks that can hold back soil, materials, flood waters, and fire to protect a site or compound.<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Material storage, with the option of constructing a storage bay quickly and efficiently on-site for sand, grit and soil. Storage bays can contain loose materials, separated materials for recycling, or waste products for clear designation and safe handling procedures.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Flood defences to prevent nearby water sources from causing damage to sites adjacent to streams, lakes and piping.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Supporting walls as a temporary or ongoing measure to allow roofing structures or overhead construction to carry out without risk of slippage. L8 blocks create retaining walls where sites are at risk of slippages or mudslides, particularly where newly-dug foundations or wet weather make the threats more acute.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Fire protection, using the natural fire resistance of concrete blocks to prevent fire from penetrating containment areas, emergency shelters and refuges. Fire protection shields can also be used to defend higher-valued machinery and plant.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      L8 blocks are also used in agriculture for grain storage as well as a physical blockade within construction sites where potential slippages could put worker safety at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

      How Are L8 Blocks Manufactured?<\/h2>\n

      High-tensile strength L8 blocks are made from aggregate materials, normally sourced according to local availability, with cem<\/span>ent to bind and secure the block structure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Blocks are evaluated by Newtons per mm or stiffness and must adhere to a standard of 50N per mm<\/span>2<\/span>, indicating the block’s resistance against impact. These calibrated performance measurements show how a physical force will impact the block and analyse the metric stress of pressure based on force against the unit area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Using technical specifications allows experienced concrete block providers to recommend the correct model based on the dimensions and square footage of material, force or pressure you need your concrete block barrier to withstand.<\/span><\/p>\n
