Hull City Council has partnered with Clearway to deploy AI-powered CCTV cameras across fly-tipping hotspots in the city. The innovative system is designed to detect and deter illegal dumping in real time, making it easier to catch offenders and keep streets clean.

Smart Surveillance That Acts Fast
Clearway’s mobile CCTV towers use advanced artificial intelligence to monitor areas 24/7. The AI automatically recognises fly-tipping activity, such as vehicles stopping and dumping waste, and instantly alerts enforcement teams. This allows the council to act quickly, often within minutes.
“We hope this technology will act as a deterrent and help us catch those responsible for environmental crimes,” a Hull City Council spokesperson said.

How Clearway’s Technology Helps
Real-time alerts: Instant notifications are sent to enforcement officers when suspicious activity is detected.
Accurate detection: AI is trained to identify people and vehicles involved in fly-tipping, reducing false alarms from wind, wildlife, or passers-by.
Temporary & flexible: The CCTV towers are fully mobile, making it easy to move them between problem areas as needed.
Data-driven insights: Footage is analysed by Clearway Labs, helping the council understand where and when illegal dumping occurs.
Backed by Clearway Labs
All footage from the cameras is processed using Clearway’s in-house AI platform, Clearway Labs. This turns CCTV into actionable intelligence, providing Hull City Council with detailed reports and heatmaps of fly-tipping trends—enabling smarter, more targeted enforcement.

Protecting Public Spaces
The initiative is part of Hull City Council’s broader commitment to improving environmental standards and protecting public spaces. By working with Clearway, the council is using cutting-edge tools to crack down on repeat fly-tippers and send a strong message: illegal dumping will not be tolerated.
