Our Construction Site Security Services

We’ve assembled a range of building site security services that are essential for maintaining a safe and productive environment.

Clearway site security services cover everything from access control and manned guarding, to site CCTV, video-verified alarms and perimeter detection.

Construction Site CCTV

Our purpose-built CCTV towers can be installed and configured quickly once on-site, providing instant visual security for large open spaces. The CCTV camera is mounted at the top of a 6m telescopic mast, instantly providing extensive coverage, ensuring your site is monitored from all angles.

Our CCTV towers include two large solar panels that recharge a set of high-capacity batteries. Together, they will keep the CCTV tower running 24/7, independently of mains power.

Our CCTV towers will also run from 240V mains power, should it be available. Requiring very little maintenance, this robust and responsive construction site security solution can be set up within minutes and removed quickly as and when needed.

CCTV Monitoring

Our fixed or temporary CCTV systems are set, by default, to record 24/7 and can be viewed via a mobile device or PC from any location.

Multiple passive infrared sensors can be installed to provide trigger points, such as entrances and exits to a site, where a PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) camera can point and focus on in the event of an activation. These events can be monitored by our NSI Gold Cat II Alarm Receiving Centre, allowing for round-the-clock surveillance and collection of video footage for evidence, if required.

Additionally, our ARC can monitor intruder and fire alarm activations, video-verified alarm systems and other construction site security systems, to provide a quick reaction and response to breaches in security.

Construction Site Perimeter Security

InView Detect, our innovative wireless intrusion detection system, provides immediate protection for construction sites, where security needs can change swiftly with daily activity shifting the perimeter of the site.

Our autonomous intrusion detection system actively monitors the site, promptly detecting any unauthorised activities or intrusions and triggering real-time alerts. This feature is crucial for preventing theft of construction materials, equipment, and tools, as well as deterring potential trespassers.

The extendable coverage of inView Detect, reaching up to 2000 meters with multiple units, ensures comprehensive surveillance across expansive construction sites. Its adaptability allows for quick repositioning or deployment of additional units, accommodating the evolving layout of construction projects.

The system’s rugged design and tamper-proof features make it resilient to the challenging conditions of construction sites, where robust security measures are essential. InView Detect’s integration capabilities with central monitoring enhance the overall security posture, enabling swift verification of alerts and timely responses to potential security incidents.

Video Verified Alarms

Whilst regular alarm systems can monitor movement or changes within a specific area, via a variety of sensor types, there is typically no indication as to what caused an alarm to be triggered, only the activation itself.

Our video-verified alarm system takes the alarm activation process one step further. As well as sounding a 100db alarm, it uses its built-in camera to capture a series of still images, collates them into a ten-second clip of the cause of the activation, and sends it, with a notification, directly to a pre-determined recipient or to our NSI Gold Cat II Alarm Receiving Centre. The appropriate action can then be taken depending on the perceived level of the threat.

Video-verified alarms are a particularly efficient way of monitoring a construction site, as both false and genuine alarm activations can be identified immediately, before any response team is deployed, especially for vacant construction sites or areas with low movement expected.

Video Verified Alarms

Battery life for all devices, including the control panel, is up to 4 years. A pre-recorded voice challenge can also be added as an option.

Concrete Barrier Blocks

The nature of construction sites, with large areas of open land, limited access to mains power, and multiple possible entry routes, can make them difficult to defend from intruders and fly-tippers using conventional security approaches.

Concrete barrier blocks can be an ideal solution since they can be erected around long boundary lines and perimeters to create a continuous blockade, or placed in strategic positions, such as between tree lines, to ensure the site is not accessible away from supervised entrances.

Construction teams use concrete barriers to control vehicular access and block entry routes from thieves who commonly use vehicles to carry stolen equipment.

Fly-tipping is also a major issue on open land or unoccupied land, such as when a site is in the early stages of development, and if your construction site is left unattended for longer periods of time.

Construction Site Alarms

Clearway’s construction site alarms are a vital security measure, designed to protect sites from theft, vandalism, and unauthorised access. These battery-powered alarms operate independently of mains power, eliminating the need for plugging in and making them highly versatile for dynamic construction environments.

Featuring advanced motion detection, they provide round-the-clock monitoring and instant notifications of suspicious activity. Built with durable, weather-resistant materials and equipped for remote management, Clearway’s alarms deliver reliable protection, ensuring your site stays secure and your assets remain safeguarded at all times.

What Do Our Security Experts Say?

We know that construction sites deal with multiple security challenges, from high-value equipment and tools to perimeters that can be tricky to control. Even less severe problems like vandalism and fly-tipping cause delays, safety issues and even reputational damage.

The stats concerning construction site theft are frightening, but our security solutions are designed to deter criminal activity and ensure your site remains protected, as the consequential costs can be considerable, both in terms of delays to your project and financial loss to the scheme promoter/contractor.

    A Successful Project

The client was starting a new project in Sheffield city centre, near buildings, shops, and several active construction sites. The project was situated around a live building, requiring careful consideration of resident safety and security measures.

Traditional 24/7 CCTV systems were not ideal due to privacy concerns, and the limited space ruled out the use of large self-sustained Solar CCTV towers.

The client approached Clearway to provide a more effective and less labour-intensive solution to the problem.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you deploy security to a live site?

With nationwide coverage and flexible capacity, we’ll provide immediate advice on the available options to manage critical risks, protecting your site while you decide on how to deal with security concerns over the longer term.

Can I get fire detection and CCTV as a combined package?

Yes, absolutely – when we say we offer a full range of services, we mean just that. Some construction sites might need general fire detection equipment or evacuation plans, alongside CCTV around their perimeters.

Others might require advanced, full-scope surveillance, AI-enabled entry points and automatic number plate recognition alongside cutting-edge fire detection equipment to deal with high-risk factors like live electricity cables or flammable materials.

Do you offer short-term contracts for phased builds?

We do. Contractors and developers requiring short-term security, like wireless surveillance towers and alarms, or staggered security coverage during phased projects, are welcome to run through their requirements, and we’ll advise on the options.

What happens if I move to a new site — can the systems move with me?

If you’re moving to a new construction site or to the next phase in a project, we’ll make sure your surveillance, devices and monitoring move with you. We can also deploy construction site security at empty developments in the meantime to keep locations protected until you’re ready to start work.

Temporary systems are easy to remove and relocate, and we’ll manage all the logistics while you deal with your own transition from one site to the next.

Are your guards SIA licensed and trained for construction sites?

Every Clearway guard is fully SIA certified. We use clearly signed security vehicles, professional uniforms and advanced communications equipment, with guards who have extensive experience in emergency responses, de-escalation and investigating potential security breaches.

    Why are construction sites targeted?

Construction sites are often a target due to:

    • High-value assets, equipment and tools.
    • Open access points and easy vehicular entry.
    • Vacant sites out of hours and during weekends.

Trespassing and intrusion can result in extensive costs and damage that have a long-lasting impact.

Many construction businesses have experienced tens of thousands of pounds worth of expenses to replace stolen assets and repair damage, and delays of months while repairs are carried out, due to a lack of security safeguards. Whilst cameras can provide evidence after a crime has occurred, by then, the damage is done, and the construction project has been delayed until the equipment can be replaced or the damage repaired.

The severe and sometimes business-critical impact of security limitations is far-reaching. Therefore, it is crucial to work with an experienced and proficient construction site security partner who can protect your site during every stage of the project.

What threats do construction sites face?

Construction site security threats are not limited to the theft of tools. In fact, the consequences of a security threat can result in loss of human life, so it’s extremely important that all risks are considered to prevent that outcome. Some of the primary risk factors include:

    • High-value equipment, machine, plant and tools left unguarded overnight.
    • Vehicles left vulnerable to fuel theft when the site is empty.
    • Vandalism and site damage caused by intruders where site access is exposed.
    • Workforce risks where security provisions are not sufficient to provide staff safety.
    • Risks within sites close to civil disturbances and unrest, such as protests, which disrupt and delay work progress or create issues with site access.
    • Environmental risks, including weather damage, strong winds, flooding and fire.

What is included in a site risk assessment?

A risk assessment is more than a checklist exercise or an insurance requirement – it is an essential tool to assist construction site managers in clearly identifying key risks and being able to make informed decisions about the best mitigation strategy.

During a risk appraisal, we’ll work through these phases:

    1. Conduct a detailed site survey to identify the most pressing risks, and those that need to be addressed as a secondary priority.
    2. Record how serious that risk is and what issues it potentially presents.
    3. Decide which risks are crucial to site operations to establish a list of priorities.
    4. Work with a security professional to identify the best security safeguards available to eliminate or mitigate that risk and compare alternative options.
    5. Put in place security strategies, and review regularly and whenever site operations change.

One of the most common concerns for construction site managers is the costs of protecting their premises and how to balance a tight budget while avoiding critical risks. That means cost analyses are just as important during the risk assessment process, where we’ll provide advice on both the practical, security and financial considerations:

    • Potential costs of not mitigating the risk factor.
    • Security options and the respective costs of each.
    • Anticipated effectiveness of the security solutions.
    • The element of workforce risk where employee protection is a top priority.

Your risk assessment is also a powerful communication tool, and by sharing these with your workforce, you help all employees remain diligent, understand where risk factors are present, and work with site security to prevent any breaches from occurring.

What are the best ways to protect a construction site?

Your building site security will depend on multiple factors such as hours of work, points of entry, the storage and location of valuable assets, and the flow of traffic around your site.

Generally, we advise the following, broken down into three categories: deterrents, detection and response.

    Intruder Deterrents:

There should be a number of construction site security measures in place to make opportunistic thieves think twice about attempting a breach. These should include products such as unclimbable perimeter security fencing as well as electronic security features such as CCTV. Consider the following:

    • Visible security presence and signage.
    • Robust perimeter fencing and security access points.
    • CCTV monitoring and maintenance.
    • Manned guarding and construction site access control.
    • Concrete barrier hire to prevent unauthorised vehicular access.
    • Security lighting, alarms and sensors.

You may also want to consider:

    • Restricting the number of vehicles on site and having a sign-in / sign-out authorisation process in place. This would help to identify non-scheduled deliveries or unmarked vehicles with malicious intent.
    • Preventing vehicle access altogether – by implementing turnstiles and restricting access points, you can get a clear picture of who is on the site and when, whilst granting access to authorised personnel only.
    • Full and wide-reaching lighting – having floodlights or timed lighting not only ensures that staff can work safely, but also prevents vandalism and break-ins.

    Efficient Detection Systems:

Should your first line of construction site security not deter the offender, there should be a number of detection systems in place to identify a threat as quickly as possible and to provide evidence if needed, if a police investigation ensues.

Detection systems are often broken down into operational solutions (those that require human response) and physical detection systems (usually electronic, such as CCTV). Whilst operational activities such as manned guarding and patrols increase the level of deterrence, they can be expensive. Physical detection systems, such as the solutions outlined below, often come at a reduced ongoing cost and prevent any threat to human life. Physical detection systems include:

    • CCTV solutions, infra-red monitoring and wireless sensors to immediately detect activity.
    • Remote monitoring services – this activity is then fed directly to an alarm receiving centre. Those manning the system will immediately review the intrusion and alert those on site (or deploy a rapid response security team to investigate).
    • Construction site access control to vet and approve each visitor.
    • Advanced alarm systems to detect breaches, smoke, or fire.

    Response systems

Whilst detecting a threat is the first step in dealing with a security breach on a building site, the response is critical to limiting the amount of damage incurred. By utilising a remote monitoring system, operators can very quickly respond to security breaches, alerting emergency services if needed. Your response solutions should include:

    • Instant intruder alerts with appropriate personnel informed.
    • Intruder detection warning systems.
    • Automatic lock and unlock facilities.
    • Keyholding services to respond to alarm activations and callouts.
    • Live CCTV imaging, monitoring, and high-quality video retention.
