Key information
Scope of project: wearable devices
Area: Nationwide
Services: Bodycams, remote monitoring
Background
Our client, Core Highways (Core) provides nationwide Temporary Traffic Management (TM) services on urban and high-speed networks. The increase in roadworker abuse over the years has only added to the risks associated with working in a highway environment. Core needed to protect their workforce and their on-site assets and approached Clearway for a solution.

Solution
Our inSite body cameras were the perfect solution, these innovative wearable devices are proven to deter and de-escalate threatening / aggressive behaviour towards staff, they will:
✅ Ensure that any disruptive or abusive incidents are being tracked and recorded, supporting follow-up action, or prompting further safety measures to prevent a recurrence.
✅ Provide an irrefutable log of activities – essential to disprove and challenge false complaints or allegations or allow managers to investigate potential issues to understand the true course of events.
✅ Capture sharp, crisp images that managers can share with the authorities, police, and emergency services to apprehend and prosecute offenders who have broken the law.
Features include:
• Simultaneous audio and video recording
• 720p / 1080p / 1296p / 1440p / 1512p recording definitions
• Inbuilt flashlight for increased visibility
• 2-way audio communications
• Real time location
• Redact faces & number plate information via online portal
• Live SOS alerting back to our NSI Gold Cat II Alarm Receiving Centre
• Team leader audio broadcast function

Outcome
Over a 12-month period, our bodycams recorded incidents of abuse from the public as well as attempts to drive through traffic management and run over operatives. In one case, a member of the public accused an operative of saying something that the operative denied, recorded footage of the incident categorically proved that the member of the public was lying. Without this evidence, an innocent man could have lost his job.
Initially it was a challenge to get team buy-in on the use of this technology, however, the teams ultimately agreed the did feel safer. Wearing the devices helps to reduce the day-to-day abuse from the general public who now approach the operatives in a different manner, knowing that incidents are being recorded.
“The Clearway bodycams provide a superior technology with wider capabilities. We are yet to be in a geographical area where our teams don’t get a signal and the SOS feature is great. From a supervisor’s perspective, it’s good to be able to see from the portal which devices are on/off so we can check in with the wearer immediately. The ability to record and evidence incidents helps towards a successful prosecution, should it be required. The portal provides us with a lot of tools and is easy to use, and the training required for this and the devices themselves is minimal.”
